Self care? I can hear it now, “I’m stuck in the house for the next month, how do you expect me to do that?” or “who has time/energy/privacy for that right now?”
We have all heard the sayings like “you can’t take care of others if you don’t take care of yourself” or “ you can’t be at your best if you don’t take care of yourself”. And that’s just when the world is spinning normally. During a time of crisis, like we are all experiencing now, a new normal starts to form. You see it everywhere with people wearing face masks in public, not hugging or shaking hands, etc. So I’m thinking that now is as good a time as any to start your new normal in the self care department. What do you think?
But what does self care actually entail?…
Self Care is defined as The practice of taking an active role in protecting one’s own well being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress. Bingo! Sound familiar? Periods of stress…I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that right now is a perfect definition of a period of stress. Let’s break that down further, shall we?
If well-being is defined as the state of being comfortable, healthy, or happy then what do YOU need to achieve this state? Is it more or better sleep? More exercise? Less stress? More help at home? Less pain? Less fatigue? Each of us different as far as what will make us feel whole. For example, writing this blog contributes significantly to my well-being in that it fills a creative void I miss by not massaging right now.
Now, back to you. While I can’t help you with the housework or other sources of stress you may be experiencing, I can help with the other things. While massage has been shown to help achieve better sleep, reduce pain, manage stress, help bolster the immune system, increase flexibility, and more unless you are fortunate enough to live with a massage therapist you are probably going to have to wait a little longer for that massage. I feel your pain, I really truly do. Not only do I not get to help you feel better, no one is giving me massages either!! However, there are things you can do at home to help in the meantime.
Stay tuned for my next post where I will give you some ideas for how to massage yourself and other tips for some harmony at home.
In the meantime,
Self Care is not selfish- you cannot serve from an empty vessel.Eleanor Brown
P.S. If you are ready for something to look forward to, feel free to schedule your next massage after June 1st when we reopen!
